During the Global SME Finance Forum 2018, José González-Páramo, Executive Board Director for BBVA, shares why BBVA is focusing their activities around SMEs and the changes happening within supply and demand.

Páramo shared, “Bank funding is the main source of external financing for SMEs. We focus on what makes it difficult for them [SMEs] to access finance, in particular non-standardized information they produce. We are entirely focused on SMEs.”

Banking and finance professionals attended the Global SME Finance Forum 2018's study tour on November 5 in Madrid. The tour featured 12 financial institutions and fintechs that have best in class, innovative ways of serving SMEs clients.

One of the participants said the tour was time well spent.

"They shared so many things that actually blew my mind and broke all the paradigms," said Robert Ochola, African Export-Import Bank. "These guys used innovation from two years to around seven months, from actual ideation to commericialization."

This year, Women’s World Banking hosted a digital financial services workshop, showcasing best practices in creating products with women in mind and maximizing digital technology to service low-income women.

Video: FinTech Company Yoco Is Making Card Payments Easier for SMEs

Yoco has decreased a process that originally took SMEs weeks to complete down to 10 minutes.

Co-founder and CEO of Yoco, Katlego Maphai, sits down with CNBC Africa to share how they are making card payments easy and accessible, in addition to securing R230mn to innovate SME payment services. 

Maphai shares, it is as simple as going online, paying for the card reader and it is shipped to your door. Majority of the sales interactions are conducted through social media, making the entire process less expensive.

Small-scale entrepreneurs in Sub-Saharan Africa generally struggle to get loans because they lack the required collateral or credit history. Digital credit offers a potential solution to this problem, since the usage of a mobile money service generate data that can then be used to automatically assess the creditworthiness of the user. In Madagascar, IFC and the Mastercard Foundation partnered with microfinance bank Baobab to test the viability of digital loans.
