Private Sector Engagement with Women’s Economic Empowerment

Oxford University’s Linda Scott, Emeritus DP World Professor for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Said Business School has launched The Global Business Coalition for Women’s Economic Empowerment (GBC4WEE) initiative, with a document that brings together her perspective of the collective learning of nine companies engaged in women’s economic empowerment programmes around the world: The Coca-Cola Company, ExxonMobil Foundation, Goldman Sachs, Marks & Spencer, Mondeléz International, Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, PwC, Qualcomm® Wireless Reach™, and Walmart.

Banks around the world are fast embracing value chain finance as an engine of growth for their small and medium enterprise business segments. Estimates have shown that between 14 and 20 million SMEs are either unserved or underserved in developing countries, amounting to a credit gap of nearly US$1trn. Nearly one third of this credit gap is estimated to be linked to value chains, thus creating a significant market opportunity for financial institutions.

Financing Patterns of European SMEs: An Empirical Taxonomy

While research in SME financing has strongly increased over the recent years, studies focusing on the analysis of financing patterns of SMEs in Europe are still lacking. The research presented in this working paper provides an integrative perspective of such SME financing patterns by identifying and analysing in detail the use of various financing instruments by SMEs.
