GPFI Seminar - Digital Financial Inclusion for Youth, Women and SMEs - Riyad

It was my great pleasure to be asked to contribute to this seminar, which is kicking off the Saudi G20 presidency’s work on financial inclusion on 22 January 2020, in Ryad.  The purpose of the seminar is to bring together experts, policymakers, scholars, businesses and more to share insights, as the presidency dives into producing high level calls to action for governments to help move along digital inclusion for these key groups.

Disruptive Technologies in the Credit Information Sharing Industry: Developments and Implications - Fintech Note

This note analyzes the evolution of Credit Information Systems, including the emergence of new technologies that use alternative data in credit decisioning and the opportunities and risks associated with these trends. This paper also predicts the potential development effect of these disruptive technologies and proposes a role for the World Bank Group in leveraging these technologies to promote inclusion and stability.

Since its formation, the SME Finance Forum has been on top of all of the major trends in this field. We predicted the importance of partnership when all around us were emphasizing fintech-bank competition. We declared that competitiveness in financing now had to include additional non-financial support for improving SMEs themselves – a reversal of decades of advice, but now common wisdom.

Doing Business 2020

The Doing Business 2020 study, by the World Bank Group, shows that developing economies are catching up with developed economies in ease of doing business. This publication is the 17th in a series of annual studies investigating the regulations that enhance business activity and those that constrain it. Doing Business presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 190 economies— from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe—and over time.
